The Perfect Family Weekend in Hawera

Two days of museums, beaches and local experiences in South Taranaki.

Hawera is an underrated family destination. Skip the tourist crowds and discover a region with world-class museums, stunning national park walks, unspoilt beaches and friendly local character. Here's how to make the most of two days based at The Furlong Motel.

Day 1: Tawhiti Museum & Hawera Town

Start your Saturday with Tawhiti Museum — allow the full morning. This isn't your typical regional museum. The life-size dioramas and hundreds of mechanical figures created by local artist Nigel Ogle have genuinely wowed visitors for decades. Kids and adults alike are captivated. The boats-into-the-past ride (when running) is a highlight.

After lunch, head into Hawera town centre. Climb the Water Tower for panoramic views of the South Taranaki plains and — on a clear day — Mt Taranaki rising above everything. On the way down, stop at one of the town centre cafes for afternoon tea.

Finish the day at Hawera Aquatic Centre for a swim. The hydroslides are popular with kids. Return to The Furlong for dinner — your room's kitchenette makes self-catering easy, or grab takeaways from town (just 2km away).

Day 2: Egmont National Park & Opunake Beach

Head towards Mt Taranaki — about 45 minutes from Hawera. The Wilkies Pools walk (45 minutes return) is perfect for families: easy terrain, lush bush and swimming holes. Pack lunch and walking shoes.

On the way back, take the coastal road through Opunake. It's a 35-minute detour that's absolutely worth it. Opunake Beach is safe for swimming, there's a good playground, and the town has a charming local feel. Grab an ice cream and enjoy the surf.

Head back to Hawera along the coast road, stopping at lookout points along the way. By Sunday evening you'll have covered two of South Taranaki's biggest drawcards — and still have energy to spare.
